  • Resumen
    • The “International Exhibition of Chinese Art” held at Burlington House, London, from November 28, 1935, to March 7, 1936, maintains its role as the pivotal event in Chinese art history. The writer examines the national and international sociopolitical factors that affected the organization of this extraordinarily well-received and -attended show of 3,080 works, where the social, economic, political, and academic theaters in the West and East became fully integrated. He considers it as the culmination of a series of exhibitions of Chinese art held in Europe before and after World War I, which he reviews here. He also examines the various forces that combined to make it the largest exhibition of Chinese art ever organized, including how the Chinese government generously cooperated to bring China to international attention as the intellectual and political equal of Western powers. He goes on to compare it to today's blockbuster shows and to highlight the aims it served in the art market, the museum world, and the academy.
