A review of Antonello da Messina. L'opera completa, a catalog edited by Mauro Lucco. This catalog accompanied a recent exhibition devoted to the 15th-century Italian artist, which closed on June 25, 2006, at the Scuderie del Quirinale, Rome. The catalog concentrates mostly on chronology, influences, and attributions; because of this almost exclusive focus, however, it runs the risk of reducing a great artist to such details. Each entry features complete and useful summaries of art historians' opinions on the works, but with few exceptions, disappointingly little is written on the meaning of the images or the ways they function.
