  • The author suggests that 17th-century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer's switch from historical to modern genre subjects in the 1650s was the result of influence from contemporary Petrarchan lyrical poetry. The author focuses on the link between art and literature in 17th-century Holland and describes the depiction of women and courtship in Petrarchism. Specific topics addressed include genre paintings by Gerard ter Borch, 17th-century Dutch art theory, Vermeer's painting "Girl with a pearl earring," and the use of mirrors in Vermeer's paintings and Petrarchan poetry.
