  • The writer describes the employment opportunities for local artists that arose due to the visit that Maximilian of Austria, son of Roman Emperor Ferdinand I and King of Bohemia, paid to Emperor Charles V at the Coudenberg Palace, Brussels, in 1556. The reception of royal visitors in the Coudenberg Palace frequently resulted in welcome employment opportunities for the local artists. The royal courts service required artists and artisans to decorate the reception rooms of the palace and to ensure the comfort of the important visitors. This article discusses the work done by local artists for the 1556 visit.
