  • Resumen
    • There are few doubts about the pharmacological interestof medicinal plants. More than 120 vegetal substances of well known structure are globally used in current medical practice. Crude material from plants has /ess importance, instead its growing econocmic and scientific interest. There isn't possible to assure an absolute safety from medicinal plant preparations based only in epidemiological studies. Among the various adverse reactions to medicinal plants, we can quote 1- Allergic reactions (like that of psyllium or german chamomille); 2- Plants with known toxic substances (specially that ones rich in pirrolizidine alkaloids, aristolochic acid or phorbol esters}; 3- plants misidentified or with erroneaus labeling (Gnaphalium sp., Atropa belladonna, Eleuterococcus}; 4- Addition of non-vegetal substances to herbal mixtures (specially in chinese or oriental mixes with lead, arsenicum, gold, etc.}; 5- Contaminants of environmental origin (aflatoxins form aspergillus, microbiological contaminations, etc.}; 6- lnteractions with other medical remedies (Citrus paradisi, Perseo americana}; and 7- Not explained adverse reactions (Larrea tridentata, Teucrium chamaedrys}.
