Familiar geometric shapes--such as rectangular windows and doors and octagonal stop signs--can be seen all around us. The patio and path shown in photograph 1 have stones of an unusual shape. They are not regular polygons; they do not exhibit any standard symmetry; they certainly do not have straight sides. And two smaller stones can be arranged adjacent to one another to just match the outline of one of the larger stones.
