The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) recently held a summit meeting to address the role of undergraduate institutions in transformative research. This summit was prompted by the omission of undergraduate institutions from the conversation that had occurred at several National Science Board workshops held between 2004 and 2006 to identify key factors to foster transformative science. Given that the National Science Foundation Grant Proposal Guide has now incorporated the revised new intellectual merit criterion specifying potential transformative research, this CUR summit meeting sought to provide recommendations to individuals, PUI institutions, CUR, and federal funding agencies to enable faculty at predominantly undergraduate institutions to submit competitive proposals successfully satisfying this criterion.
