This paper investigates deixis phenomena in direct reported speech, using data from facetoface interaction. Following Marmaridou (2000), Ruba (1996), Cutrer (1994) and Fauconnier (1994, 1997), it is argued that there is a mental space within speech domain which anchors the interpretation of deictic expressions and functions, in this case, as the base space (the discourse deictic center).
