This paper analyzes the novel Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas in correlation with other works by Machado de Assis. It aims at characterizing the ruptures and the hybridism promoted by the author through the dialogue with several literary traditions. As a result, the study demonstrates how writing becomes a perfect invention as it achieves absolute falsification.
