La Girona del barroc: ciutat de convents

    Throughout the Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries the number of convents in the city of Girona is doubled. The Baroque period meant, among other things, the emergence or strengthening of monastic life: to the seven convents ( Benedictines and mendicants) of the medieval Girona, eight more were added. At the end of the Seventeenth century people form Girona lived with monks and nuns from fifteen convents, and aso with the clergy of the Cathedral and priests of the parishes and chapels that were scattered along the city. Girona had a notorious religious character, that determined its features and social behavior. Therefore, to understand the baroque Girona, we must take into account the high percentage of religious people. In this sense, the text proposes an approach, a guided tour, to the different convents of the city in time of the Baroque, to know, succinctly, how they were and who lived there.

    Al llarg dels segles XVI i XVII el nombre de convents de la ciutat de Girona es va multiplicar per dos. L'època del barroc va significar, entre d'altres, l'eclosió o reforçament de la vida monàstica: als set convents, entre benedictins i mendicants, de la Girona medieval, se n'hi afegiren vuit més. A final del segle XVII els gironins convivien amb mojos i monges de quinze convents diferents, a més dels clergues de la Seu i els de les parròquies i capelles que hi havia escampades per la ciutat.

    Girona tenia, doncs, un marcat caràcter religiós que en va determinar la fesomia i els comportaments socials. Per tant, per entendre el barroc gironí, cal tenir en compte aquest alt percentatge de població religiosa. En aquest sentit, el text proposa una aproximació, una visita guiada, als diferents convents de la ciutat en temps del barroc, per recollir, de manera succinta, com eren i qui hi vivia.
