    From the second half of the eleventh century onwards the figure of the PopeGregory VII became the subject of a growing repertoire of stories about miracles, visions andspiritual prowess. The relations with the sacred attributed to the Pope and allies are describedwith unique characteristics, conditioned by the institutional reality of the Roman church. Withthe support of a sociological theory of religion, we propose an attempt to explain historicallycertain central features of this "Gregorian sacred”: the combativeness, the political orientationand the utopian dimension.

    A partir da segunda metade do século XI a figura de Gregório VII se tornou o temade um crescente repertório de estórias sobre milagres, visões e proezas espirituais. As relaçõescom o sagrado atribuídas ao papa e aliados são descritas com características singulares,delineadas pela realidade institucional da igreja romana da época. Com o apoio teórico de umaleitura sociológica da religião, propomos uma tentativa de explicar historicamente certascaracterísticas centrais do “sagrado gregoriano”: a combatividade, o sentido político e adimensão utópica.
