    El artículo muestra las relaciones entre Nicaragua y la URSS en los años precedentes a la caída del sistema comunista, a través de la correspondencia personal entre Daniel Ortega y Mijail Gorbachov. En estas, y otras cartas entre líderes de ambos países, se ponen de manifiesto las dificultades de la crisis económica en ambas latitudes y sus consecuencias, así como el tipo de influencia que tuvo la URSS en el proceso de consolidación de la revolución sandinista. Por otro lado, se aprecia de forma evidente la desconfianza e incomprensión de EE.UU. hacia la revolución sandinista y su convencimiento inamovible de que en Nicaragua se pretendía instalar un sistema similar al soviético. Todo ello llevó a la derrota electoral sandinista de 1990, paralela al final de la Guerra Fría.

    The article shows the relationships among Nicaragua and the USSR in the former years to the communist system fall through the private mail between Daniel Ortega and Mijail Gorbachov. In these letters it is revealed the troubles of the economic crisis in both latitudes and its consequences, just like the influence which the USSR had in the consolidation process of the Sandinista revolution as well. Additionally the letters clearly expose the mistrust and the lack of understanding of USA towards the Sandinista revolution and its depth certainty about the settlement of a political system similar to the soviet. This frame explains the Sandinista electoral defeat in 1990, which run parallel to the end of the Cold War.
