    Ecological or environmental history has several subfields. Among the topics studied are climate history and the history of dealing with natural resources such as energy. It also involves the description of changes in ecosystems, particulary how these are caused by humans, such as pollution, manure, and acidification. Human-animal relationships are important and popular themes in ecological history. This paper presents a case study on the semi-wild rabbit in Dutch dunes. In the 13th century rabbits were introduced from southern Europe into so-called dune parks to produce fur and meat. These parks, in which both the rabbit and the environment were manipulate to produce large rabbit populations, existed until well into the 18th century. The central quiestion is how far humans could control and influence this rabbit population in terms of habitat, predation, food. and reproduction. The same question, closely related, applies to rabbit populations outside these dune parks.

    De ecologische of milieugeschiedenis kent diverse takken. tot de onderwerpen behoren de geschiedenis van het klimaat en de geschiedenis van het omgaan met natuurlijke hulpbronnen zoals energie. Ook behoort ertoe de beschrijving van veranderingen in ecosystemen vooral zoals die door de mens veroorzaakt zijn, bijvoorbeeld vervuiling, vermesting en verzuring. De relatie mens-dier is eveneens een belangrijk en populair thema binnen de ecologische geschiedenis. In het volgende wordt als voorbeeld een case-study over het halfwilde konijn in de Nederlandse duinen gepresenteerd.
