  • The article discusses political conditions in China, focusing on the use of "authoritarian adaptation," which substitutes policy reform for institutional change, in prolonging the life of China's authoritarian communist regime. Topics include an analysis of the support for further reform; modernization theory, economic development, and political legitimacy in China; and the Chinese state's stability maintenance apparatus designed to eliminate political space in which resistance to the regime might develop
