The poncif is, for Baudelaire, an annoying mistake, whether it be in the ordinary touch, in the conventional expression or in the hackneyed pose. The critique’s first reaction is a movement of anger, combining irony with disappointment. Starting from the definition of the Salon of 1846, we will shed some light on the links between the theatrical poncif and the world of childhood, especially in the Spleen de Paris. We will see how Baudelaire takes the example of theater to illustrate the richness of childhood imagination and how this imagination becomes the ideal remedy against the poncif.

Le poncif est, pour Baudelaire, un agaçant travers, qu’il soit dans la touche banale, dans l’expression convenue ou dans la pose éculée. La première réaction du critique est un mouvement de colère, mêlant l’ironie à la déception. À partir de la définition du Salon de 1846, on donnera un aperçu des liens intimes qui unissent, dans Le Spleen de Paris plus particulièrement, le poncif théâtral au monde de l’enfance. On observera comment Baudelaire prend l’exemple du théâtre pour illustrer la fécondité de l’imagination enfantine et comment cette imagination devient le remède idéal au poncif.
