En este artículo se estudian los confl ictos jurisdiccionales entre los prelados de Manila y los jesuitas (siglos XVI-XVIII). En primer lugar, se analiza la actitud intervencionista de los prelados en los asuntos de gobierno de las parroquias administradas por las órdenes religiosas, y en particular, por la Compañía de Jesús. En segundo lugar, se analiza el papel de los procuradores jesuitas en las cortes de Madrid y Roma como una reacción frente a la hostilidad del arzobispo fray Felipe Pardo (1677-1689), debatiéndose sobre la conveniencia de seguir administrando dichas parroquias. Finalmente se analiza la política del arzobispo Diego Camacho y Ávila (1697-1705) y su intención de visitar las más de 700 doctrinas o parroquias de su diócesis, haciendo especial hincapié en los confl ictos con la Compañía de Jesús.

In this article are studied the jurisdictional confl icts between the archbishops of Manila and the Jesuits (16th-18th centuries). First I stress the interventionist attitude of the prelate in issues of civil government of those parishes administered by the religious orders, and particularly, by the Society of Jesus.
Second I focus on the role of the Jesuit procurators in the courts of Madrid and Rome as a reaction to the hostility of the prelate fray Felipe Pardo (1677-89), debating about the convenience of continuing administering such parishes. Finally I conclude with the politics of the archbishop Diego Camacho y Ávila (1697-1705) and his attempt to visit the more than 700 doctrines or parishes of his diocese, putting special emphasis on the confl icts with the Society of Jesus.
