Quando Cesare Beccaria inizia a scrivere "Dei delitti e delle pene", ha soltanto 25 anni. Nonostante la sua giovanissima età, e mentre tiene l'intera umanità sotto i suoi occhi, egli e consapevole di scrivere per i posteri. Si sente dunque investito da una sorta di missione universale. I 250 anni trascorsi dalla prima edizione del capolavoro attestano e confermano, attraverso il grandissimo numero di traduzioni nelle diverse lingue, e l'accoglimento dei suoi principi nelle Costituzioni e nelle legislazioni di vari Paesi, oltre che nelle Carte fondamentali, la grandezza e la perenne attualità dei suoi messaggi di giustizia e di progresso civile.
When he began to write "On Crimes and Punishments", Cesare Beccaria was only twenty-five years oId. Despite his very young age, he was able to look at mankind as a whole, knowing that he was writing for posterity. He thus felt called upon fulfilling a a universal mission. Since the first edition of his masterpiece 250 years ago, the large number of its translations and the reception of its fundamental principles in several Constitutions, legislations, and Bills of rights, testify and confirm the magnitude and everlasting actuality of Beccaria's messages on justice and civil progress.
