M. Alfaro, R. Martínez, F. Centeno, G. Araujo

  • Fifteen crossbreed cows (Holstein x Brown Swiss and Brown Swiss x Ayrshire), in mid lactation, with a live weigth of 408 ± 52 kg, body condition of 1.76 ± 0.10 and milk production of 6.5 ± 0.24 liters per day, from the herd of the National School of Agriculture of El Salvador, located at 420 meter of altitude were subjected to three experimental rations for 45 days, with the purpose of evaluating the nutritive potential of fresh mulberry (Morus alba) cv Kanva-2. The experimental design used was completely randomized and to each ration five cows were assigned. The levels of mulberry was from 0 (M0), 3 (M3) and 6 (M6) kg of dry matterx cow-1xday-1, offered in fresh and chopped form, in the morning, substituting part of the unbalanced ration offered currently and based on chopped elephant-grass (Pennisetum purpureum) and 2 kg of a mixture of stubbles, molasses and poultry manure. The response was measured in function of the milk yield (RL), milky fat (GL), and change of weight (CP); the results obtained in the respective order, reflected that RL (kg x cow-1 x day-1) it was similar (P>.05) with stocking of 6.20 ± 0.25; while the rest of the variables, showed statistically significant differences (P
