An attestation by padre Resta on the ‘Presentation of Mary in the Temple’ by Baldassarre Peruzzi.
A reliable seventeenth–century source unknown till now sheds light on the historical and critical circumstances in which the celebrated mural painting by Baldassarre Peruzzi in Santa Maria della Pace was reduced and altered during renovations carried out in the church by Pietro da Cortona at the time of Alexander VII. Drawing on first–hand information, Sebastiano Resta explains, in fact, that the ‘Presentation of Mary in the Temple’ was cut down on the left side, and that the figure of the beggar here was completely repainted (as previously supposed by C.L. Frommel) by Lazzaro Baldi, Berrettini’s faithful disciple, on the latter’s orders, so as to adapt the sixteenth–century painting to the new architectural and decorative arrangement that was then being given to the octagon of the church.
