An analogy for the principle of separation by mass spectrometry has been developed that uses the overhead projector. Metal spheres are rolled down an inclined Plexiglas sheet which has a magnet underneath. The spheres are deflected as they roll down the incline. The degree of deflection is inversely related to the mass of each sphere.
