The distinction between heat and temperature can be troubling for beginning chemistry students. An analogy is presented which uses briefcases of money to distinguish between the two. Situations involving high and low energy systems associated with both high and low temperature are presented using pictorial representations of briefcases of money. Temperature changes associated with mixing systems or adding energy to similar systems are also described.
