Ancient traditions about origins of civilisations of Pre-Roman Italy not only deeply influenced modern attempts to classification of languages whose genealogical tree is unknown, such as Etruscan and Elymian, but also oriented the history of languages genealogically well known, such as Oscan and Sicel. A new critical assessment of ancient sources in an interdisciplinary perspective is needed by epigraphic data newly acquired, that pose a methodical challenge to the advancement of the investigation in the field of antiquity.
