    Between 1895 and 1917, when different organisations working for public decency coalesced into a vast International of puritanism, the publisher Charles Carrington (1867-1921) based his catalogue on a generalised hybridisation – and was thus to ensure it a surprisingly long life. In choosing to complexify the run-of-the-mill back-and-forth of references across the Channel, this formidable entrepreneur grounded on internationalism an industry that was to lead to today’s globalisation of “ethnic porn”. Foreignness was no longer for him simply the possibility of freely publishing, or the engine of a vague ethnicism ; it contributed to uniting the white elites in representations, which also reaffirmed the norm as much as they displaced it
