    • Teaching upper-level undergraduate and graduate chemistry courses relies heavily on students learning and remembering basic concepts from previous classes. Students often do not make the connection between the current topic that they are studying and prior material, even when they have understood the relevant concepts in their previous classes. An instructor can make these links for students during lecture, although reteaching basic concepts takes time away from covering the advanced topics of upper-level courses. A student studying notes, reading a textbook, or doing independent research may not be able to make the appropriate links to basic concepts that are required to understand the task at hand. A student studying for example, a hypermedia spectroscopy document has immediate links to the relevant remedial information and can concentrate on studying the appropriate material. This paper describes hypermedia computer technology that incorporates in-context links to related documents and multimedia material.
