  • Resumen
    • Within the project of systematic research on archaeological landscapes of the Carapelle Valley between the roman towns of Ausculum (Ascoli Satriano - FG) and Herdonia (Ordona - FG), fits the analysis of two important sample sites of Roman period: the villa of Sedia dOrlando and the vicus of Fontana di Rano. The study of both settlements is characterized by the integration of data derived from the archives and those obtained as results of the surface investigation, data resulting from the geomagnetic exploration and what emerged from the analysis of vertical and oblique aerial documentation available for area under examination. Specifically, the villa of Sedia dOrlando (late 1st century. B.C. 6th century A.D.) is assignable to the type of architectural and urban organization of the villa rustica-medium-large size, with square layout in a compact, tight succession of living quarters (eastern sector) and the space available for productive and crafts activities closely connected to the first (western sector). Concernig the imperial and late antique vicus of Fontana di Rano, it is a settlement of significant size (12 hectares) and complex structure, not far from the course of the river Carapelle, close to a forest and a natural spring; it is crossed by a portion of a connection path between the centers of Ausculum and Herdonia. The data obtained so far apply only to a limited portion of the entire settlement. The aerial and geomagnetic anomalies return, however, the image of a cluster of structures close to the road axis whose presence would influence the distribution and orientations of individual buildings. It is conceivable the presence of modest building units, which may be used as living space, and an architectural unit, characterized by an organized sequence of rooms, the function of which remains unclear. In addition, it is likely the location, in the eastern part of the site, of structures dedicated to the processing of metal; in the same way, it is likely to assume the existence of structures used for the storage and processing of foodstuffs, not regularly localizable.
