The alfalfa press-cake residuo from protein concéntrate extraction, contains the 75% of the alfalfa original dry matter. Thus, it should be considered the main product of the process.

If the press-cake is to be used as fresh forage, the economic intereset of the alfalfa wet fractionation process will depend on the economic of that product for ruminants, as well as that of the protein concéntrate for monogastric.

Because of this, we have calculated least cost diets for dairy cows, beef and sheep, in order to stablish the prices at wich press-cake would particípate in these diets. Results show tha it compets economicaly with dry forages, but not with fresh alfalfa or meadow grass. Without other fresh forages, press-cake will participate in these diets if its price is 14,50 ptas./ kg. dry matter, or lower; this figure is nearly the same of the present alfalfa hay price.

Products from alfalfa fractionation increase the alfalfa valué about 60% in relation to hay-making. But it is also necessary to evalúate the opportunity of a tecnology highly dependent of the energy costs.

Meadow grass shows a very high economic valué in the studied diets.

Nevertheless, the mo^t of the milk and meat production systems in Spain, even in pasture r.reas, are based on concéntrate feeds, making a poor utilization of the grass potential.
