    En este artículo se hace una revisión de la producción científica de investigaciones realizadas en Latinoamérica y Europa durante los últimos diez años, en torno a las percepciones y lecturas que se han construido de la escuela y del cumplimiento de sus funciones en el marco académico y en los procesos de socialización, reconociendo sus falencias, pero haciendo énfasis en las posibilidades que ofrece el entorno educativo tal y como está planteado, para la formación integral de niños y adolescentes. Se hace un análisis de las posibilidades de la escuela para responder a las transformaciones de la familia como institución social, teniendo en cuenta cómo esta influye en sus acciones y en las expectativas que se ponen en la tarea educativa. Por último, se propone una mirada alternativa a la escuela y a la adolescencia para generar la reflexión en torno a la función social de la escuela desde la cual es posible generar cambios en la población estudiantil y como consecuencia, en el entramado social.

    This article makes a revision of the scientific production of some research studies conducted in Latin America and Europe during the past ten years which have revolved around the perceptions and readings that have been drawn on school and the fulfillment of its functions in the academic setting and the socialization processes; recognizing its flaws and stressing the possibilities offered by the educational environment just as it is structured, intended to the integral formation of children and teenagers. The analysis is done around the possibilities of the school to respond to the transformations of the family as a social institution taking into account the way in which it influences its actions and the set of expectations entrusted in the educational process. Lastly, it is proposed an alternative look at the school and the youth in order to raise reflection upon school’s social role from which it is possible to manage transformations in the student population;  and therefore, in the social fabric.
