  • Resumen
    • This steel industry was selected for this study because it is a major basic industry in each of the three countries and because the industry faces intense global trade competition. This paper briefly reviews the technologial and operational differences between minimills and integrated mills. Also, the evolution of global steel demand is related and compared to industry structure in Canada, the United States, and México. "Finally, empirically estimated price and income elasticies are used to evaluate the impact of changes in export and import voluntes by product line that have occurred in the United States and Canada following the US-Canada Free Trade Agreement. By reviewing the recent changes in trade patterns following the 1989 implementation of that Agreement, projections may be made about the impact of NAFTA on the steel industry in the three countries.
