Resumen de GC-MS and GC-FTIR Characterization of Products:: From Classical Freshman and Sophomore Syntheses

John A. Mosbo, Donna S. Amenta, Thomas C. DeVore, Thomas N. Gallaher, C. M. Zook

  • As part of our sophomore majors' integrated inorganic/organic laboratory, the popular syntheses of ferrocene and acetylferrocene are carried out. In addition to the techniques of sublimation, thin layer and column chromatography, FTIR, and FTIR-NMR (both 1H and 13C), we have introduced the characterization of these reactions by GC-MS. The GC separation of ferrocene, acetylferrocene, and diacetylferrocene is accomplished in less than ten minutes. In addition to the operation of the instrument, the students are introduced to the interpretation of mass spectra and library aided spectral identification. For a number of reasons this system is especially well suited to the introduction of MS.

Since student response by our sophomores was so favorable, we have incorporated GC-MS into our freshman laboratory experience as well. Students analyze metal acetylacetonates that they have prepared. Experimental conditions and results for several complexes are described.
