    Since Early Christianity, the pilgrimage to Rome was a key aspect in the spread of the faith. Pilgrims take with them offers and alms to the Eternal City that became fundamental for the maintenance of the different churches. So quickly the papacy established a self-govern system to manage these resources and the basilicas supplied their own liturgical needs independently. In this context, in 1506 the Fabbrica di San Pietro was founded becoming over the centuries an instrument of affirmation of the spiritual and temporal power of the Church.

    Dai primi secoli del Cristianesimo il pellegrinaggio a Roma fu la chiave per la propagazione della fede; le offerte lasciate dai pellegrini nella città eterna furono fondamentali per il mantenimento delle chiese e il Papato impose un sistema di autogoverno delle basiliche al fine di soddisfare le necessità liturgiche e materiali. In tal contesto si impose, dalla sua fondazione nel 1506, la Fabbrica di S. Pietro che divenne, nei secoli, strumento di affermazione del potere spirituale e temporale della Chiesa.
