Las aportaciones de los manuscritos pictográficos al estudio del juego de pelota

    Cada manuscrito pictográfico necesita un estudio específico, conforme con su lógica interna, su procedencia y su temática. Aun estudios temáticos transversales también pueden proporcionar resultados significativos. Tal es el caso de las representaciones de juegos de pelota. En el marco de este trabajo se han podido registrar 157 representaciones repartidas en 58 manuscritos, principalmente del altiplano. Su estudio sistemático permite obtener algunas conclusiones relativas a su arquitectura, su significado y su simbolismo. Sintéticamente, se definen cuatro funciones distintas, aunque no exclusivas: el tlachco como cancha, como topónimo, como antropónimo y con valor ritual y simbólico. Todas las representaciones pictográficas de canchas, aunque con sus especificidades conforme a los manuscritos, se ubican en el marco de un concepto compartido de dualidad, de alternancia de las temporadas del ciclo vital y vegetal.

    Every pictographic manuscript needs a specific study, in attention to its internal logic, its place of origin and its subject matter. Transversal thematic studies may also yield significant results. Such is the case of the representations of the pelota game. In the framework of the present work 157 representations were registered from a total of 58 manuscripts, mainly from the Altiplano. The systematic study of these enabled certain conclusion to be reached concerning the courts’ architecture, meaning and symbolism. Synthetically, four different functions have been defined, although these are not mutually exclusive: the tlachco as game court, as place name, as personal name and with a ritual and symbolic value. All the pictographic representations of ball-courts, although with their specificities according to each manuscript, are situated in the framework of a shared concept of duality, alternation involving seasons in the life and vegetation cycles.
