    Esbrinar el significat dels topònims exigeix, primerament, el coneixement del lloc a través del treball de camp i la consegüent enquesta realitzada sobre el terreny. Altrament, l’estudi dels documents d’arxiu se’ns ofereix com un element imprescindible per a la correcta comprensió i interpretació dels noms de lloc. Sovint, són els documents antics els elements capaços de treure’n l’aigua clara d’errònies etimologies populars o d’evolucions fonètiques que han desdibuixat el sentit primer d’aquell indret. En el present article mostrem quatre exemples ben aclaridors sobre els beneficis de la documentació en la interpretació dels topònims.

    Finding out the meaning of toponyms requires, in the first place, knowledge of the place through fieldwork and subsequent field survey. On the other hand, the study of archive documents is to us an imperative for a proper understanding and interpretation of place names.

    Often, old documents are the elements capable of making sense out of erroneous popular etymologies or phonetic changes that have blurred the first meaning of that place name. In this paper we show four very illuminating examples of the benefits of documentation in the interpretation of toponyms.
