    This paper explores the notion of Practical Knowledge of Survival from the combination of the concepts of knowledge (Geertz, 1983/2009; Tardif, 2002) with the survival strategies theory (Woods, 1990). Initially, we discuss the theoretical perspectives on knowledge. In this discussion, we indicate how they can engage in a conversation with Woods’ survival strategies (1990). Then, we identify, through semi- structured interviews (Lüdke & André, 1986; Rizzini, 1999), the Practical Knowledge of Survival in English language teacher education, informed by experienced teachers enrolled in an English Language Teaching undergraduate program. The results show the various ways of dealing with the adversities that arise in the daily routine of the English language teaching profession.

    Este artigo sistematiza a noção de Saberes Práticos de Sobrevivência a partir da junção dos conceitos de saberes (Geertz, 1983/2009; Tardif, 2002) com as estratégias de sobrevivência em sala de aula de Woods (1990). Inicialmente, são discutidas as perspectivas teóricas sobre os saberes. Nessa discussão, aponta-se como elas podem dialogar com as estratégias de sobrevivência de Woods (1990). Em seguida, são identificados, por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas (Lüdke & André, 1986; Rizzini, 1999), os Saberes Práticos de Sobrevivência que professores de inglês, com experiência docente em institutos de idiomas e/ou escolas regulares, e matriculados na Licenciatura em Letras-Inglês, utilizam em sua prática docente. Os resultados apontam as mais diversas maneiras de lidar com as adversidades que surgem no ofício docente em uma sala de aula de inglês.
