    The aim of this article is to examine the origins of the Standing-Buddha-image, resulting from an intercultural dialogue between the Roman Empire and Kushan India, between the first and the third century BC. It is argued that this representation of traditional Buddhist iconography was inspired by the model of Augustus Labican, thus bridging the Mediterranean’s cultures and the Buddhist religion.

    O objetivo desse artigo é examinar as origens da imagem do Buda em Pé, baseada num processo de diálogo intercultural entre o Império Romano e a Índia Kushan, no período dos séculos 1º ao 3º EC. Nossa proposta é de que essa representação, tradicional na iconografia budista, buscou inspiração no modelo do Augusto Labicano, estabelecendo uma ponte entre as culturas do Mediterrâneo e a religião budista.
