Resumen de Biblioteca literaria para médicos (I)

No parece posible ejercer de forma eficaz la medicina si no se es capaz de comprender sentimientos aje‐ nos tan íntimos y profundos como el dolor, la soledad, la depresión, la impotencia ante la enfermedad incurable o el temor a la muerte. Una buena escuela para alcanzar un entendimiento cabal de tales sen‐ timientos puede ser la lectura de las grandes obras literarias de todos los tiempos. En esta «Biblioteca literaria para médicos» se recopila una lista esencial de setenta obras literarias, dentro de los límites cro‐ nológicos de la Edad Moderna y la Edad Contemporánea, cuya trama gira en torno a la enfermedad, la locura, el hospital, el ejercicio profesional de la medicina o la figura histórica y social del médico. En la primera parte del artículo, se enumeran y comentan brevemente los treinta y cinco primeros títulos seleccionados, desde el Auto dos físicos (1512) de Gil Vicente hasta el Pabellón de reposo (1943) de Camilo José Cela

The adequate practice of medicine is a difficult job if some intimate and deep feelings of patients, such pain, loneliness, depression and helplessness facing an incurable disease or the fear of dying, are not fully understood. A good way to gain a satisfactory understanding of such feelings might be the reading of the great literary works of all times. In this “Medical library for physicians” an essential list of seventy literary works from the Modern to the Contemporary periods has been collected. Their plot is about the disease, the madness, the hospital, the professionalism and the historical and social images of the physicians. In the first part of the article, a brief review of the first thirty five books is carried out. It considers from Auto dos físicos (1512) by Gil Vicente to Pabellón de reposo (1943) by Camilo José Cela.
