  • Resumen
    • Palladio in Venice. Purposes of renovatio for the patriarchal church of San Pietro di Castello.

Wittkower has taught us that the extraordinary success achieved by Andrea Palladio in the design of the Venetian church of the Redentore is the result of a process of reflection and research initiated about twenty years earlier, with his design for the façade of the patriarchal church of San Pietro di Castello. Antonio Foscari, while giving a new interpretation of the church's building contract endorsed by the Patriarch of Venice on 9 January 1559 (1558 "more veneto"), formulates a new idea for the project's reconstruction. Investigations on a valuable sheet on which are concentrated -in a draft letter margins- many notations by Palladio seem to indicate that the architect was only partially convinced by the solution he proposed to the Patriarch of Venice and the Barbaro brothers, who financially supported his initiative. In substance, he remained indeed convinced that the ancient Venetian church should not undergo a global renovatio and have a central-plan church built on its foundation.
