El creciente número de buques de vapor, que eran masivamente independientes del viento y las corrientes marinas, después del decenio de 1820, condujo a regular las normas de navegación y a la adopción de un sistema uniforme de luces de posición por los buques cuando se encontraban en la mar, para mediados del decenio de 1860. El desarrollo y adopción de este último sistema, que fue adoptado después de algunos ensayos por parte del Almirantazgo y en colaboración con los franceses, es el objeto de este articulo.

The increasing number of steam vessels, which were largely independent of the wind and sea currents, after the 1820s led to “rule of the road” regulations and a uniform system of navigation lights to be displayed by ships encountering one another by the mid-1860s. The development and adoption of the latter system, which was adopted following trials by the Admiralty and in collaboration with the French, is the focus of this essay.
