Resumen de Coordination Chemistry of Pd(II) Complexes with P-Donor Ligands:: An Introduction to Synthesis and Structural Characterization in Coordination Chemistry

Esteban P. Urriolabeitia

  • The synthesis and complete characterization of a family of Pd(II) complexes containing two or more Pd-P bonds as a laboratory experiment on coordination chemistry is reported. The practical work involves the synthesis of the dinuclear starting compound [Pd(µ-Cl)(PPh3)2]2 (BF4)2 (1) and its reactivity. Selected reactions have been chosen in order to introduce to the student some common concepts and skills in coordination chemistry, such as the substitution of weakly coordinated ligands, the chelate effect, and the generation of coordinatively unsaturated species, between others. These reactions allow the synthesis of some mononuclear complexes, such as [PdCl(PPh3)3](BF4) (2), [PdCl(PPh2CH2PPh2-P,P')(PPh3)](BF4) (3), [Pd(acac-O,O')(PPh3)2](BF4) (4) and [Pd(PPh2CH2PPh2-P,P')(PPh3)2](BF4)2 (5), which are characterized by spectroscopic (IR, NMR) and other physical methods (molar conductance in solution).
