Entre 1720 y 1750 la marina mercante británica dominó las rutas intraeuropeas más rentables, especialmente entre el norte y el sur de Europa. El aspecto más importante en este sentido fue la expulsión de los competidores holandeses de estos tráficos justo después de la Paz de Utrecht. Este fenómeno secular no ha merecido mucha atención y mucha menos explicación por parte de los historiadores marítimos y económicos. Este trabajo describe la cronología, las causas y las consecuencias de este triunfo británico sobre los holandeses y los hamburgueses con la ayuda de las visiones de los expertos de la época y material estadístico.

Between 1720 and 1750 the British merchant marine dominated the most profitable intra-European sea-lanes, especially between northern and southern Europe. Most important in this regard was the ousting of its Dutch competitors on these routes shortly after the Peace of Utrecht. This secular phenomenon has not attracted much attention and has led to even less explanation by maritime and economic historians. This essay traces the chronology, causes and consequences for this British triumph over the Dutch and the Hamburgers with the help of the views of contemporary experts and statistical material.
