    A comienzos del siglo XXI desde diferentes sectores se insta a la sociedad civil a asumir su responsabilidad por la realización del bien común. El poder político, al que se encomendaba esa tarea tradicionalmente, parece incapaz de lograrlo en el nivel de los Estados nacionales, de las entidades supranacionales y en el nivel global. Ante esta invocación es preciso aclarar si la sociedad civil puede ser agente responsable de justicia, si debe serlo y cómo. El artículo intenta responder a estas preguntas 1) aclarando qué es la sociedad civil, desde la historia y en el actual debate; 2) analizando las razones por las que debería colaborar en la conformación de una estructura de responsabilidad compartida y los obstáculos con que se encuentra para hacerlo; y 3) sacando a la luz yacimientos de responsabilidad que ya están funcionando en la sociedad civil moderna en el nivel local y global.

    At the beginning of the 21st century, various sectors are urging civil society to accept its responsibility for achieving the common good. The political authorities, which had traditionally been entrusted with this task, seem incapable of achieving it at the level of national states, supranational bodies or at global level. Faced with this call to action, it is necessary to clarify whether civil society can be the agent responsible for justice, whether it should be, and how it might be possible. This article is an attempt to answer these questions by 1) making clear what civil society is on the basis of history and the current debate; 2) analysing the reasons why it should cooperate in forming a structure of shared responsibility, and the obstacles it faces in doing so; and 3) bringing to light underlying responsibilities that are already operating in modern civil society at local and global level.
