Following a thesis of Klaus W. Hempfer, my article discusses the verifiability of interpretations. Apart from a text’s specific structure, a further criterion of judgment is the cultural context of the text’s origin, handed down in complex ways. This criterion enables us to validate the meaning ascribed to the text as one possible meaning; but only, of course, if the relevance of the cultural context can be proven for the text’s semantics.
