    La resonancia magnética (RM) es uno de los métodos utilizados para su completo estudio y diagnóstico. Este método es utilizado no sólo por la información anatómica y funcional que aporta, sino porque es una técnica que evita las radiaciones ionizantes. Contiene gran cantidad de indicaciones y muy pocas contraindicaciones por lo que se considera una buena técnica.

    Objetivos: Describir las indicaciones y contraindicaciones de la RM y así mismo su aplicación en la articulación temporomandibular (ATM).

    Material y Métodos: Consistió en una revisión bibliográfica mediante búsqueda de artículos en bases de datos e internet.

    Resultados: Se siguió un protocolo para la obtención de las imágenes mediante RM, como: la reproducción anatómica de las estructuras blandas, valoración de la movilidad y desplazamiento del disco, análisis métrico cuantitativo, hipermovilidad condilar y reproducción anatómica de los tejidos óseos.

    Conclusiones: La RM es importante porque evita las radiaciones ionizantes, se puede aplicar en la mayoría de los casos excepto cuando existen elementos ferromagnéticos. Puede existir alguna dificultad porque existen problemas de mala interpretación. Pero para muchos estudiosos es la prueba diagnostica del futuro.

    The magnetic resonance (RM) is one of the methods used for its complete study and diagnosis. This method is used not only by anatomical and functional the information that it contributes, but because it is a technique that avoids the ionizing radiations. It contains great amount of indications and very few contraindications reason because is considered diagnoses in image of the future.

    Objectives: To describe to the indications and contraindications of the RM and also its application in the joint to temporomandibular (ATM).

    Material and Methods: It consisted of a bibliographical revision by means of article search in Internet and data bases.

    Results: A protocol was followed for the obtaining of the images, like: the anatomical reproduction of the soft structures, valuation of mobility and displacement of the disc, quantitative metric analysis, hypermobility to condilar and anatomical reproduction of bony weaves.

    Conclusions: The RM is important because it avoids the ionizant radiations, can be applied in most of the cases except when ferromagnetic elements exist. Some difficulty can exist because problems of bad interpretation exist. But for many students it is the test diagnoses of the future.
