The possibility or rather the impossibility of translating Hrabal's works in other languages is a frequently discussed topic as his works are often considered untranslatable by the Czech readers and scholars. Nevertheless, he is admired and highly regarded in many foreign countries, including Italy. This article aims to draw attention to the various problems a translator must face when translating Hrabal. These problems regard mainly lexical and stylistic peculiarities, syntax and punctuation. The analysis is based mainly on two Italian translations of the Hrabal's story called Pábitelé from the homonymous book.

La possibilità ovvero l'impossibilità di tradurre le opere di Bohumil Hrabal in altre lingue è un argomento frequentemente discusso tra i lettori e gli studiosi dello scrittore ceco. Eppure Bohumil Hrabal è da tempo stimato e ammirato in vari paesi del mondo, Italia inclusa. Questo articolo vuole attirare l'attenzione sui vari problemi che un traduttore deve affrontare traducendo i testi di Hrabal. Questi problemi riguardano soprattutto le peculiarità lessicali e stilistiche, la sintassi e la punteggiatura. L'analisi si basa sul confronto tra due traduzioni italiane del racconto Pábitelé tratto dalla raccolta omonima.
