Reference electrodes are commonplace in potentiometry and voltammetry and their importance in the chemical laboratory is out of question. Commercially available reference electrodes are usually bulky and unsuited for many purposes (e.g., to be used in small electrochemical cells within a Luggin capillary). In this contribution we describe the construction of a silver-silver chloride reference electrode that can be readily assembled in any teaching laboratory and that fulfills most of the requirements expected for a device of this kind.
