Spreadsheet exercises designed for in-depth examination of the first-order rate law are described. The exercises illustrate two main approaches for analyzing first-order rate data and allow students to examine how they are affected by systematic and random errors. One method involves plotting the logarithm of a property proportional to the concentration of the species undergoing exponential decay, and the other is the method of Guggenheim. The exercises aim to provide a sound foundation for the students to make intelligent decisions with regard to data acquisition and analysis.
