A new solid-phase reaction method used to synthesize a new type of azo compound is described. The procedure is short, safe, and simple enough to serve as a laboratory exercise for undergraduate students in the middle weeks of a course when azo compounds or synthesis methods have been discussed in the lecture. The compounds synthesized are N-(4'-ethoxyphenyl)-2-phenyl diazenecarboxamide and phenyl-2-phenylhydrazide diazenecarboxylic acid. They can easily be obtained by oxidation of N-(4'-ethoxyphenyl)-2-phenyl hydrazinecarboxamide and 2,2'-diphenyl-carbonic dihydrazide using ferric nitrate as an oxidation reagent in a solid phase reaction .
N-(4'-Ethoxyphenyl)-2-phenyl diazenecarboxamide can be used as dye, and phenyl-2-phenylhydrazide diazenecarboxylic acid is a reagent already widely used in analytical chemistry. The experiments are also designed to demonstrate the uses of the products. All the experimental work can be completed in a three-hour period. All processes use inexpensive equipment and materials that are readily available in most undergraduate laboratories.
