  • THIS is the second edition of a book that is well known by those working with animals in disaster situations. It was first published in 2009 in recognition of the importance of livestock to people, especially the rural poor in disaster-prone areas, and the lack of guidance that was available. It explains the Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards (LEGS) and how to use these to help assess, design, implement and support animals in disaster situations, in the context of protecting livelihoods. It is an accompaniment to the Sphere Handbook (www.sphereproject.org/handbook) used in humanitarian responses.
