Avian influenza: US government to build an AI vaccine stockpile

    • THE United States government is to build a stockpile of avian influenza vaccine to ensure that vaccine is available should a decision be taken to use it in a future outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

      On October 13, the US Department of Agriculture announced that its Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) had awarded contracts to manufacture avian influenza vaccine for the National Veterinary Stockpile to Ceva and Harrisvaccines. It said that the development of the stockpile did not signal a decision to vaccinate against HPAI and that the APHIS had not approved the use of vaccine in response to the disease. ‘Any decision to use vaccination in a future HPAI outbreak would require careful consideration of the efficacy of the vaccine, any impacts of using HPAI vaccine in the field, and the potential trade impacts,’ the APHIS said....
