Recruitment: Shortage of experienced vets

  • AS a young vet (I graduated in 2013) it is most discouraging to be reading the recent reports about the difficulty from an employers' point of view in recruiting suitably experienced staff (VR, October 10, 2015, vol 177, p 352; October 17, 2015, vol 177, pp 396-397). I'm on the other side of the equation. Having left a mixed practice job in April after health problems were making work impossible and having now recovered from an operation, I have been looking for five months for a large animal or mixed with a farm bias job but keep being unsuccessful at interviews based on experience level. This is to the extent that I am contemplating leaving the profession as there don't seem to be any suitable openings for me....
