  • The article discusses U.S. foreign relations with Africa during the administration of U.S. president Barack Obama. It discusses optimism in Africa for the Obama presidency given Obama's roots as the son of a Kenyan father, compares Obama's policies toward Africa to former U.S. president George W. Bush, and states that Obama's focus on wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and political considerations caused him to divert his attention away from Africa. The article examines the limited U.S. interests in Africa, military cooperation and policy toward the Sahel region of Africa, humanitarian and diplomatic efforts in the African Great Lakes region, particularly concerning Sudan, South Sudan, and Congo, in addition to Islamic fundamentalism in Africa
